My dog sometimes eats her feces.Q: I have a 1 and a half yr old rott/shephard mix and she occasionally is caught picking up her feces and eating it. why is she doing this and what can i do to get her to stop? thank you margo A: Deter is a safe and effective easy to feed chewable tablet. it is used to stop dogs and puppies from consuming their own feces. consumption of feces (coprophagia) is a common but disturbing habit in dogs. the cause of this behavior is unknown, but this product is formulated to stop this.
Danger of too strong medicationQ: Hi doctor, i am very glad to see this catagory added. i got my 15 lb. cat from a petsmart and plan to keep him indoors. the ladies there told me that advantage and frontline was way too strong in their opinion and could cause seizures or worse. they said applying a topical once every 3 months (a dab) behind the neck is sufficient. all of the meds i see seem to require the entire tube, as often as once a month! what product are they recommending that is milder that only has to be applied every 3 months? also, the prices here seem to be higher than the stores' brands. A: I dont think products over the counter are safer than front line or advantage. i would stick with those. either is fine. frontline can be applied every 3 months in indoor cats for flea prevention

Fleas & itchy skinQ: I have 4 cats. two of which seem to be reacting much worse to fleas. i have dipped them for the fleas using adams pyrethrin dip, but this seems to have irritated their skin even worse. their skin is very dry and itchy, and they are pulling out their fur around their back and paws. we want to try advantage or frontline but are hesitant to worsen their condition any futher. they still have fleas and are suffering, not to mention we are expecting a baby and would like to get rid of the flea problem as inexpensively as possible asap. thanks, kim parker A: I would try a few doses of oral capstar as well as oral program for quick kill of adult fleas well as preventing future reproduction. also consider home treatment with very safe product known as fleabusters which you can find on line
