Moist/hot/oily/itching/allergic dogQ: I have tried all kinds of shampoos for my shih tzu. she has severe allergies to both food and the environment, and getting old. i just want to keep her comfortable in between her steroid treatments that we try to keep to a minimum. her skin is is moist, oily, hot, scaley, and she has a burnt corn chip type smell to her. i have tried your coal tar, and other brands with the same ingredients; it doesn't help much. chlorehexiderm seems to be the freshest smelling although it doesn't quite do the trick. tea tree products (melaleuca) have not worked, neither has oatmeal. is there another suggestion. i have searched your shampoos and see there are other possibilities. i just don't which one to choose. please help me. sincerely....heather A: I would try ketachlor shampoo used every few days; make sure let sit on skin for 10 minutes and lather up before rinsing off. sounds like your pet has overgrowth of yeast on skin. ask your vet about this as well as possiblity of oral med known as ketaconazole if yeast is diagnosed

How to get medication without prescriptionQ: I went to my vet to get my two yorkies tested for heartworms and to get a prescription from the vet to order heartworm medicine over the internet and she will not do that. i just bought the medicine from the vet clinic. is there a way for me to now buy it from petmeds without my vets prescription? A: The law is very specific about requiring prescriptions for products where they deem it a necessity. you should have free choice as to where you purchase your prescriptions. in many states a written prescription must be supplied on request. the american veterinary medical society also advises their members to provide one when requested.

Vitamin c; ester cQ: In one of your answers you recommended that the dog be given 1000 i.u. of vit c twice a day. i had always been advised to give only 1000 i.u. of vit c per day. is giving 2000 i.u. per day better? also, is ester c the same as any other vitamin c? what is the advantage of the better c product? thank you. A: It is actually in mg not iu with vitamin c. also ester c is non acidic form of vitamin c and usually better on stomach. if your pet can tolorate 2000 mg per day of ester c then that is better. only side effect with vitamin c is diarrhea.
