Maltise nipping and licking constantally
Q: I have noticed throughout history q7a of itching dogs w/ no inscects ect. you have said try benadryl...are you speaking of the same benadryl humans take or another? i have a 5 pound maltese that is nipping her tummy constantally. if she stands she even does the balancing act on 3 legs to get a scratch in. if it is the same could you tell me the recomended dosage? thank you!!
A: It is the same product, and the suggested dose is 1 mg per pound, two to three times daily.
Danger of too strong medication
Q: Hi doctor, i am very glad to see this catagory added. i got my 15 lb. cat from a petsmart and plan to keep him indoors. the ladies there told me that advantage and frontline was way too strong in their opinion and could cause seizures or worse. they said applying a topical once every 3 months (a dab) behind the neck is sufficient. all of the meds i see seem to require the entire tube, as often as once a month! what product are they recommending that is milder that only has to be applied every 3 months? also, the prices here seem to be higher than the stores' brands.
A: I dont think products over the counter are safer than front line or advantage. i would stick with those. either is fine. frontline can be applied every 3 months in indoor cats for flea prevention
Shop for: frontline, advantage, tick
Zema collar with frontline; horses?
Q: You recommended using a zema tick collar in addition to use of frontline to someone previously. i have two outdoor dogs and cats, plus a horse; and we live in tick country. (lots of deer and other wild critters too.) should i try using both these products together? and what do you recommend for horses?
A: I am not a horse vet so will refer you to your equine vet for that one. as for collar, one i like for dogs is preventic collar. for cats a good ovitrol plus collar is fine. i find preventic collar is best tick product on market for dogs and works for up to 3 months as long as dogs dont get it submerged in water or swim with it on whihc will inactivate it. i usually use preventic collar with advantage topical for flea/tick control, but front line is fine by itself if used once monthly on all cats and dogs
Shop for: tick, preventic collar, advantage
I can't identify them
Q: Recently my male cat has lost a lot of weight, and today i saw a short white worm hanging from his tail that was about the length of my pinky nail. i've looked all over and can't figure out what it is. what is it and what should i use to treat it?
A: You could bring a stool sample to your veterinarian for a positive id of the type of worm. you can also use a broad spectrum wormer such as panacur-c. this product is given once a day, based on the weight of the pet, for 3 consecutive days.
Shop for: panacur
2 dogs, 2 sizes, 2 different frontline products?
Q: Hello, my boys are both pretty large, my aussie/lab mix weighs 75 lbs. and my black lab/chow mix is 130 lbs. i have been buying 2 seperate boxes of frontline plus (very expensive) because i will not take a chance on over/under dosing either of my boys. is there possibly a happy medium or should i contnue as i have been? i want to be safe. thank you for your time & patience. sincerely, melissa
A: Judging by the weights you show in your question, you need to use different strength products for each dog.
Shop for: frontline plus, frontline
