Danger of too strong medication
Q: Hi doctor, i am very glad to see this catagory added. i got my 15 lb. cat from a petsmart and plan to keep him indoors. the ladies there told me that advantage and frontline was way too strong in their opinion and could cause seizures or worse. they said applying a topical once every 3 months (a dab) behind the neck is sufficient. all of the meds i see seem to require the entire tube, as often as once a month! what product are they recommending that is milder that only has to be applied every 3 months? also, the prices here seem to be higher than the stores' brands.
A: I dont think products over the counter are safer than front line or advantage. i would stick with those. either is fine. frontline can be applied every 3 months in indoor cats for flea prevention

Moist/hot/oily/itching/allergic dog
Q: I have tried all kinds of shampoos for my shih tzu. she has severe allergies to both food and the environment, and getting old. i just want to keep her comfortable in between her steroid treatments that we try to keep to a minimum. her skin is is moist, oily, hot, scaley, and she has a burnt corn chip type smell to her. i have tried your coal tar, and other brands with the same ingredients; it doesn't help much. chlorehexiderm seems to be the freshest smelling although it doesn't quite do the trick. tea tree products (melaleuca) have not worked, neither has oatmeal. is there another suggestion. i have searched your shampoos and see there are other possibilities. i just don't which one to choose. please help me. sincerely....heather
A: I would try ketachlor shampoo used every few days; make sure let sit on skin for 10 minutes and lather up before rinsing off. sounds like your pet has overgrowth of yeast on skin. ask your vet about this as well as possiblity of oral med known as ketaconazole if yeast is diagnosed

Advantage vs. frontline
Q: I have a 5 yr old 15lb pomeranian who stays indoors 99% of the time. i usually give her a bath weekly and take her to the groomer once a month. (my groomer has always bragged that she never has fleas) i have kept advantage on her since she was a puppy. i have never had a problem with fleas or ticks. now this past week since we have had a few days of cool weather she has suddenly gotten eat up with fleas. i heard that frontline plus was better than advantage so i purchased some frontline plus and put on her after a good bath with flea shampoo friday. we have drenched our yards in both liquid and granual pest control (flea, ticks, ants, etc..) products two days in a row now, and this morning my pom. has more fleas than she ever has. she it totally covered as if i have not put anything on her at all. does the front line take longer to work? should i go back to the advantage? i'm running out of solutions, please help.i'm sure they (fleas) have to be in my house too. i have a 18 month old in the house with asthma and have to be careful with pestiscides that are used indoors. what should i do, will this frontline start killing these fleas soon?
A: Frontline is 100% effective in killing fleas within 18 hours of application. what you may be noticing are either fleas from eggs that were laid before the application of the frontline or because of the hyperstimulation of fleas as the product kills them, there may be the appearance of more fleas.

2 dogs, 2 sizes, 2 different frontline products?
Q: Hello, my boys are both pretty large, my aussie/lab mix weighs 75 lbs. and my black lab/chow mix is 130 lbs. i have been buying 2 seperate boxes of frontline plus (very expensive) because i will not take a chance on over/under dosing either of my boys. is there possibly a happy medium or should i contnue as i have been? i want to be safe. thank you for your time & patience. sincerely, melissa
A: Judging by the weights you show in your question, you need to use different strength products for each dog.
