Mange
Q: My pit bull i adopted has puppy mange.i used ivermectin for 3 months and it did great! well a year later it is back, one why? and 2 how do i get this w/o going through a vet? i am on a fixed income. i was told i could use ivermec at like a farm supply, but would have to figure out how it is used.they have a horse wormer pill? and an injectable? which 1 should i use? and the injectable do i inject or just give orally ? he's 80 pounds so would also have 2 figure out the dose 4 him?
A: There are 2 types of mange. demodectic (red mange) and sarcoptic (scabies). paramite dip or lymdyp are over the counter products that can be used to treat sarcoptic mange. the treatment of demodectic mange involves prescription medications such as mitaban dip or large doses of milbemycin (interceptor).|
Shop for: interceptor, paramite dip

Dosage
Q: Both of my dogs are taking heartguard.i forgot to give it to them last month. i started again this month. is it ok to skip one month on accident?
A: It is best not to skip. give the missed dose as soon as you recognize that the dose was missed and begin a new 30 day cycle from that point. the product has reminder stickers that can be used as an aid in remembering when to give the next dose.

Hair loss
Q: Our choc. lab has minor hair loss around his eyes with a small spot of scabbing/abrasions. he also exhibits a small amount of hair loss on the knuckles, not sure if this is in relation to the eyes. he is an indoor dog that does not dig or rub on concrete. i know cats can exhibit the hairloss around the eyes due to parasite's. would this be the same with dogs? or can dogs have allergies? he seems to sneeze a good bit at times, nothing continually, rub at his face and have a very wet nose. thanks for your time and consideration.
A: Sounds more like allergies to me. i would try oral benadryl at dose of 1/2 to 1 mg per pound twice daily as well as add brite coat xs and prozyme to each meal from 1800petmeds which can help skin long term. but should have allergy workup at vet
Shop for: prozyme, 1800petmeds

Ferrets and cats
Q: I have 2 ferrets and 2 cats, all of which are inside pets, and have fleas. if i were to choose between frontline and advantage, which on would be better, or should i choose 1 for the cats and the other for the ferrets?
A: I only use pyethrin sprays on ferrets or pyethrin shampoos as i dont believe advantage or front line is labelled for use in this species. either product is fine for dog or cat
Shop for: advantage, frontline

Vitamin c; ester c
Q: In one of your answers you recommended that the dog be given 1000 i.u. of vit c twice a day. i had always been advised to give only 1000 i.u. of vit c per day. is giving 2000 i.u. per day better? also, is ester c the same as any other vitamin c? what is the advantage of the better c product? thank you.
A: It is actually in mg not iu with vitamin c. also ester c is non acidic form of vitamin c and usually better on stomach. if your pet can tolorate 2000 mg per day of ester c then that is better. only side effect with vitamin c is diarrhea.

Puppy
Q: I have a 9 week old pug puppy weighing 4 pounds. can i use frontline plus on her? also, which product would you recommend frontline plus or advantix? we live in south florida. thanks!!!
A: I would start off with the frontline topspot and then graduate to the frontline plus when your pup reaches 11lbs.|i too live in south florida and find the product effective.
Shop for: frontline, frontline plus, advantix

Little white worms
Q: We have 2 cats that stay in the house. i've noticed that one has worms. i'm sure the other does too since they share a litter box. my question is, what type of worms are they? and how do we get rid of them. we're also getting lots of fleas? what flea treatment do you recommend? thank you, carol
A: The cats probably have tapeworm which can be treated using tape worm tablets for felines. you should use a product like frontline plus on your cats for flea control. you can also use a capstar tablet to kill the adult fleas. you should also treat the house for fleas as well.
Shop for: capstar, frontline plus, frontline
