FrontlineQ: I didn't use all the frontline last year how long is it good for beyond expiration date? A: Medications do not suddenly cease to work once they reach their expiration date. rather, the expiration date is the date beyond which the medicine begins to loose effectiveness and there can be no guarantee that the product will work as expected. as a pharmacist, i have to advise you that no medicine should be used beyond it's expiration date because of this potential lack of effectiveness..

Oxydex shampoo & advantage flea controlQ: We have to shampoo our small dog with oxydex at least one time per week for control of demodex. does this remove the protection of the advantage we use on him? we also have to give him a small amount of liquid ivermectin every other day. our vet said since he is on that, he does not need heartguard. true? do you also carry that product? thank you. A: If you wait 24 hours after applicatioin of the advantage you will not have any problem bathing your dog. ivermectin is the active ingredient in heartgard and you would not need both. we have ivomec solution, 1%, our sku # 10097

My dog sometimes eats her feces.Q: I have a 1 and a half yr old rott/shephard mix and she occasionally is caught picking up her feces and eating it. why is she doing this and what can i do to get her to stop? thank you margo A: Deter is a safe and effective easy to feed chewable tablet. it is used to stop dogs and puppies from consuming their own feces. consumption of feces (coprophagia) is a common but disturbing habit in dogs. the cause of this behavior is unknown, but this product is formulated to stop this.
Zema collar with frontline; horses?Q: You recommended using a zema tick collar in addition to use of frontline to someone previously. i have two outdoor dogs and cats, plus a horse; and we live in tick country. (lots of deer and other wild critters too.) should i try using both these products together? and what do you recommend for horses? A: I am not a horse vet so will refer you to your equine vet for that one. as for collar, one i like for dogs is preventic collar. for cats a good ovitrol plus collar is fine. i find preventic collar is best tick product on market for dogs and works for up to 3 months as long as dogs dont get it submerged in water or swim with it on whihc will inactivate it. i usually use preventic collar with advantage topical for flea/tick control, but front line is fine by itself if used once monthly on all cats and dogs

CdsQ: My dog is 16 years old and has cds. she was put on selegiline for a while but we just didn't see any improvement. my vet said there was nothing else that would help. can you sugest something that is not a prescription that can help with the symptoms? she was on a diet that was ment for cds (science diet food) that was suppose to help improve her symptoms but she would not eat it. she also has lost alot of weight. i'm told to have her on a low protein diet but i feel like i need to change it. her spine is really starting to show. she also has a hard time finding the food bowl and when you feed her by hand it is a battle as well. if you have any suggestions that i can do without going over my vets head, i would apreciate it. maybe some vitamins or even something herbal. A: You could try an herbal product known as senior blend, which contains some western herbs like ginkgo which sometimes can help. it is available from company known as animal apothacary which you can likely find on line somehow. also consider extra antioxidant vitamins like |e at 400iu daily as well as ester c at dose of 1000 mg twice daily. also consider supplement known as bovine colostrum from company known as prosymbiotics and add 1/3 tea of broad spectrum powder from of this company's product per 25 pounds of body weight daily to her food. i have found this product quite helpful
